Here's a gem of a photo sent
to me by John Purdy. John's wife, Maureen Green is my 7th
cousin. Her cousin, Yvonne Jones is researching the Broad family
tree too.
Both Maureen and Yvonne are descendants of William
and Susan (Nee Hill) Broad
pictured above.
John says; "I thought you might be interested in a
photograph which I scanned some years ago from an original held
by Maureen's mother. This studio portrait (Broad family group)
contains, I am told, four generations of Broads. However the
only individuals named are William Broad (c1836) on the right of
the picture with the bushy beard, and Susan Broad (born 1839)
with the baby on her knee."
He adds; "I will have a word with Maureen's mother to see if she can
identify anybody else. There are a couple more pictures which
are relevant to the Broad family but I haven't got any names
alongside them."
Thanks John!
John later added:
First of all the picture covers four generations, and I have
already pointed out Susan
(Hill) and William Broad. The lady sitting
next to Susan is a daughter of William and Susan, and the chap
standing behind W & S is the husband of this lady.
The other lady seated on the left of the photo is the daughter
of this unknown couple,
i.e. the granddaughter of W & S. The chap
standing next to her is her husband. The
baby on Susan's knee is their child.
Incidentally, the picture was taken in Radcliffe by Danby of
Sion Street.
Although I always find it hard to date old photos, judging by
the appearance of both
the older couple and the middle couple I
would hazard a (very) rough guess at
around 1910 plus or minus a bit!
At the same time we have identified several Broads in some other
old pictures below:

Broad family group 2:
Seaside photograph. Left to right Susan Jane, Sarah Ann and Mary
Ann.
No other details or dates but my guess as to the
latter would be late 1930s.
John sent some further info regarding this
picture in January 2008:
He wrote; "First of all, the picture of the
three ladies on the seashore (Susan Jane, Sarah Ann and Mary
Ann). This was taken on a holiday in Cornwall, and probably in
Penzance. Mary had long expressed a wish to return to the area
of her birth and revisit some old haunts before she died. Susan
used to save threepenny bits (you may be too young to remember
them, Allan!) in a jar, and put them towards this trip".
Yes John! Far too young to
remember threepenny bits!

Sarah Broad
Sarah Ann Jones (Broad). Date unknown.
The picture of Sarah Ann
sitting on a chair in the garden was taken in Connaught Avenue,
Whitefield, Lancashire. Maureen's mum recognised her own easel
leaning against the wall.

Jones family group 2:
Sarah Ann again. The young girl on the left is Helen Jones (yes,
it's your grandma, Yvonne). The baby is not family but a
neighbour's child who Sarah was looking after.
The picture was taken at 64 Bright Street,
Radcliffe and judging by Helen's age
I would guess around 1910.

Poss Broad Group:
Maureen's mum is convinced that this is a Broad group
photograph, but doesn't
know who they are. The picture was taken by
photographer J. Moody who had a
studio in Redruth.
William was the 8th child born to Thomas Broad
and Philippa Hodge.
