Jennefair (Jenefer) Broad was born in 1770 in St Hilary to Isaac and Ann (Nee Courtis) Broad. She was baptised 16th April 1770 in the same town and was the second of 12 children

known to be born to Isaac and Ann.

 

Her eldest brother Isaac was my Great Great Great Great Grandfather. He was born in Truro, Cornwall in 1743 and married Ann on 08 jun 1767 in St Hilary, Cornwall where she was

also born in 1747.

 

Jennefair or Jenefer married Bennett Palamountian (Pollamountain) on 17 nov 1790 in St Hilary, Cornwall. He was born in 1766 in Breage, Cornwall.

 

Bennett and Jenefer had 8 children (perhaps more?); Bennett, Mary, Richard, Isaac Broad, Jennefer, Christiana, Josiah Broad, & Elisha.

 

Christiana married Peter James 14 MAR 1829 in Breage, Cornwall.

Christiana would be the 1st cousin of my Grandfather Alfred Gifford Broad.

 

Josiah Palamountain James was born to Christian and Peter in 1839 and baptised on

23 JUL 1839 in Breage, Cornwall, England. He married Jane Ann Serpell in about 1871.

Jane was born in Forest Creek, Australia in 1853, so looks like Josiah had emigrated prior to this.

Here is Josiah Palamountian James (Jessie) with Jane Ann and three of their children;

Great granddaughter Wilma Merle Leonard, who sent me these pictures says;

"the smallest girl is Catherine (Kate) James who died aged 7, the next girl is Mary Elizabeth (Polly) James, she lived to be 93, and the young man is John Serpell James who died when

he was 16 years old. The picture was taken about 1886... (William Thomas isn't in the photo)."

Merle wrote again in Nov 2007:

Josiah Palamountain James Baptised 23rd July 1839 in Breage Cornwall England. He died on 16th December 1891 in Bendigo Victoria Australia the result of a mining accident at the St. Mungo Mine where he was working.

 

This was written in the Bendigo Advertiser Friday 18th December 1891

James, Josiah Palamounten, 49years

14 December 1891 “M ”  “B“ Cornwall St. Mungo Mine,

fall of stone James died 16th December 1891.

 

The accident occurred on Monday 14th at about 10.30am.

He was trucking quarts from a shoot at the 350 feet level when a

lump of quartz of about 5 pounds hit the side of his truck and slid off

and hit him  in the stomach.

 

After a short time he complained of much pain, he was taken to the surface

and to Dr. Thom’s surgery and then to the hospital. He died of General

Peritonitis, set up by abdominal injuries which caused a rupture of the intestine.

 

James was a member of “M.U.I.O.O.F.” and a teacher at the Wesleyan Sunday School .

 

He had liver in Barrel Street

Compensation:  10 pound  ($20: 00)

Married:  Jane Ann Serpell 1872 – 3 children

Burial:  Eaglehawk, 313 K. Unmarked.

  

Josiah and his Children’s Grave was Marked in July 2007

by Wilma his Great Granddaughter .

 

Josiah married Jane Ann Serpell on the 3rd February 1872. Jane Ann Serpell was the

daughter of John Serpell and Ann Roscrow Born 1853 in Forest Creek Victoria Australia.

She died on 16th May 1920 in Eaglehawk Victoria Australia. 

 

They had ten children but only raised two over the age of sixteen.

 

Mary Jane

 Born 1872 in Eaglehawk, Buried 25th June 1876 in Eaglehawk aged 4 years from Scarlet Fever.

 

Ury Jenkins

 Born 1874 in Nerring Buried 25th June 1876 in Eaglehawk aged 2 years also from Scarlet Fever, these dates are not wrong their death certificates are 5254 and 5255, My Mother Jean Ury James, told me that when Josiah and Jane Ann returned home from making the funeral arrangements for Mary Jane, they found Ury Jenkins had died from the same disease, they were both buried on the same day in Eaglehawk cemetery.

 

John Serpell

 Born 1876 in Eaglehawk Died 9th June 1892 in Eaglehawk aged 16 years.

 

Mary Jane

Born 1878 in Eaglehawk Died 22nd February 1879 in Eaglehawk aged 13 Months.

 

Harriet Selina

Born December 1879 in Eaglehawk Died 11th December 1880 in Eaglehawk aged 1 year.

 

Mary Elizabeth (called Polly)

Born 30th April 1881 in Eaglehawk she Married Alfred Henry Blake in June 1903

Died 10th August 1974 in Mildura Victoria Australia at the grand aged of 93.years.

 

Catherine (called Kate)

Born 14th June 1883 in Eaglehawk. Died 3rd January 1891 in Eaglehawk aged 7 years.

 

Jessie

Born 18th May 1885 in Eaglehawk Died 14th January 1886 in Eaglehawk aged 8 Months

 

William Thomas (my Grandfather)

Born 24th January 1887 in Eaglehawk.

Died 14th April 1953 in Heatherton Victoria Australia aged 66 years.

 

Jane Ann

was Stillborn and Buried in the Eaglehawk cemetery on 16th February 1889

 

How did they survive all that hardship ??

 

William Thomas James Married Lily Coxon 20th September 1919 in Collingwood Victoria. 

Lilly was the daughter of John Edward Coxon and Mary Jane Price

 

They had two children Jean Ury James (my Mother) Born 22nd December 1920 in Melbourne

Victoria Australia, Jean Died 8th October 2006 in Greensborough Victoria Australia aged 85years.

Lily Merle (called Merle) James Born 8th November 1924 in Melbourne Victoria Australia.

Died 23rd May 1995 in Westfield New Jersey U. S.A. aged 70 years.

Merle died while visiting her Son in America   

 

Here is William Thomas James taken about  1912 and again on his wedding day with wife Lilly Coxon on 20 September 1919.  Lilly was born 18 Jun 1898 in Walhalla, Victoria, Australia.

 

Lilly and William had two daughters;

Lily James (b.8th Nov 1924 d. 23rd May 1995)

Jean Ury James (b. 22nd Dec 1920 d. 8th Oct 2006)

Jean Ury married Bernard William Leonard and their daughter is Wilma Merle Leonard.
